I think that one of the main themes of the book is family. One of the reasons I think this is because Holden always looks back on his dead brother Ali. Also that Holden thinks about his sister Phoebe and has high hopes for her to go far. The other main theme of the book is innocence. A reason I think this is because Holden (when thinking of The Catcher In the Rye poem) thinks of himself ad a person who guards children from the hostility of the world.

Post #5 Holden's Independence:Beneficial or Harmful
I think his independence can be looked at in the two lights equally. It is beneficial in the fact that he can be self-sufficient. Also that he can take care of himself when his parents or guardians are there to protect him. His independence can also be taken as harmful because he does not have anyone to keep him safe or keep him in check. Also when he needs money (like in the end of the book) he has no one to go to.
